Considerations for Hydride Moderator Readiness in Microreactors

The emergence of microreactor technology has helped to drive supporting nuclear materials qualification and acceptance processes. One essential component in these small reactors is a solid moderator, which typically consists metal hydride cladding. While the behavior performance metal-hydride moderators go back early advanced reactor development for nuclear-powered aviation space propulsion, there remains knowledge gap understanding hydrogen transport–related phenomena irradiation moderators. This impacts acceptance/qualification microreactors.The goal this technical note lay out potential path forward moderator designers developers microreactors. proposed approach benefited from model core with design parameters moderator. Based on parameters, simple chart was developed major challenges where incidents, causes, effects, resolutions are described. relation between offered maturity emphasized using technological readiness. Technological readiness levels (TRLs) were clustered three sets: physical related, irradiations, system demonstration. Some needs fill gaps discussed phenomena–related TRLs. For importance identifying goals priorities stressed reach certain demonstration, it noted that must comply overall design.
